This blue commemorative plaque records: Charles Gunther (1863 - 1931) Breeder of prime beef cattle for export to Argentina originator of the Oxo cube and High Sheriff of Kent lived at Tongswood from 1902 to 1931 Gunther gave this building to the village originally a fire station in memory of his two sons lost in the Great War Recorded plaque organisation: Hawkhurst Heritage.
Charles Gunther was a prominent cattle breeder who exported prime beef cattle to Argentina and is credited with originating the Oxo cube; he also served as High Sheriff of Kent and commemorated his sons lost in World War I by donating a building originally used as a fire station.
