Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Chapelton as Cairn (prehistoric)(possible), Chapel (medieval) - (post Medieval)(possible). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

A Neolithic cairn, possibly later reused or overlain by a medieval chapel; its significance lies in the potential for understanding early ritual practices and later Christian activity in the region.
