Why it mattered
Chaffpool House matters for the exact reasons given in its official assessment, rather than merely because it is an old structure. The source records: Although uninhabited for a number of years and in an advanced state of decay there is still much of interest to be found in the, rather austere, Chaffpool House. The lack of fenestration, with the exception of one lunette, on the north and west elevations is intriguing. The roof remains intact and remnants of sash windows survive. The extensive outbuildings and rubble stone boundary walls suggest possible associations with quarrying activity to the immediate north. This explains what the place adds to local life, the street or the surviving built history.
