Cefnllys Castle stood on a narrow ridge above the River Ithon, where two stone keeps replaced a wooden motte to control the high passes of Mid Wales. The Mortimer family used the first stone castle as a badge of power, but Llywelyn ap Gruffudd captured and broke it in 1262, turning the ridge into a political wound that helped trigger Edward I's conquest. Roger Mortimer answered by building a second keep on the opposite flank, provoking Llywelyn's refusal to submit and dragging the region into war again. The town beneath the castles eventually vanished under plague and distance, leaving only ruins and St Michael's Church to mark the place where pride, fear and ambition kept colliding.
