Cecil Day-Lewis

Cecil Day-Lewis lives in a small house in County Laois, where he is teaching Daniel to see the shape of things before giving them names. The boy runs through rain until his clothes weigh like wet rope, then sits at the kitchen table with bread still warm under his hands. Cecil does not praise the bruises or the hunger. He points to a row of beans on the window ledge and asks what Daniel knows about them. The boy touches one bead, then another, and begins to answer about patience, but Cecil waits until the answer stops sounding like a lesson. Outside, the field holds both of them without claiming either.
