Cawood Castle in North Yorkshire survived the English Civil War only as a gatehouse and banqueting hall after soldiers stripped the rest for local houses. The missing chambers still loom beside the surviving stone, inviting imagination about the great feast where hundreds of swans and thousands of capons disappeared into hungry mouths. What remains is not a complete castle but a edge of one, sharp enough to make the lost part visible.
