One chamber had collapsed into grass, exposing its stone cheeks to rain and sky. The second waited beneath a heavy lintel, dark and whole, breathing cool air through a mouth no wider than a child’s outstretched arms. We stood above both, listening for water or movement, certain the earth was not empty but occupied.

In a rath (MA040-004001-). This Man-made underground passage is indicated as ‘Caves’ on the 1922 OS 6-inch map. In the W half of the rath interior, which is at a slightly higher level than the E half, there are two lintelled opening to the Man-made underground passage. One opening is located roughly in the centre of the W half. Here there is a shallow grassed over subrectangular depression, with stone-faced sides, which represents a short roofless section of passage. On the S side of the depression there is an in situ lintel covering an opening into an intact passage which extends to S. The lintelled opening (Wth 0.87m; H 0.35m) has drystone side walls built of rounded stones. An area of slight surface subsidence, located 4m to SSW may also be related to the Man-made underground passage. A second lintelled opening (Wth 1.23m; H 0.65m) is located on the inner edge of the bank scarp to W; it covers a drystone passage which to extend to SSE for several meters Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 20 April 2020
