Cave (Site of)

In 1872 Brash described a possible long cist (C0061-189---) and an ogham stone (7978) from Monataggart. Later Quarry (1896,382) revisited the site to purchase the ogham stone for the Royal Irish Academy and asked the andowner to dig on the site again in the hope of finding more ogham stones. This uncovered a stone-lined underground chamber 'about eighteen feet in length, five feet in width and five in depth ...... at the end of which were some wood ashes and the appearance of a small flue' (ibid.) Two of the upright stones had ogham inscriptions (7979; 7980). Obviously this was a separate chamber to the one opened by Brash and its size and the presence of the flue suggest a possible Man-made underground passage. No visible surface trace.
