What is recorded here

Under the floor of a common house in County Kerry, a hidden chamber waited for the right knuckle on the right tile. The walls were not dug but built, brick by brick beneath the kitchen, and they smelled of damp earth and old candle smoke. People whispered that the room was made for what could not be spoken above stairs. Others dismissed it as a wine cellar, but the door had no handle on the outside and the bricks were laid after the house stood.

In the W side of a ringfort (KE056-028----). Indicated as 'Cave' on the 1846 OS 6-inch map. A depression on the W side of the interior is remembered locally to have led to an underground passage. Compiled by: Ursula Egan Date of upload: 21 March 2013
