Castlewellan Castle is a Scottish baronial castle built by the Annesley family between 1856 and 1858. William Burn designed the structure for the 4th Earl Annesley, while the Parker partnership of Liverpool raised walls from locally quarried granite. The building overlooks Castlewellan Lake near the arboretum entrance, occupying the site of an old church. Its tall stone form still dominates the woodland, preserving the grandeur the Annesley family imposed on the County Down landscape.
