Mairi and her brother ran the Castletown firing range through the nineteenth century, testing rifles for armies that never named them in praise. They buried broken barrels beneath heather and refused every officer who arrived with ledgers and orders. The stones still hold powder ghost and pride, waiting for hands steady enough to finish what violence began.
