Orkney’s first World War coastal battery still stands at Castleneuk, Ness No.1 Battery, aimed across water where ships might have passed. Stone, sea and distance do most of the work; human hands only stepped back after building it. The battery remains a wartime marker more than a home, remembering that Orkney was not far from danger even when quiet.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castleneuk Battery, Ness No.1 Battery as Coastal Battery (first World War). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Castleneuk Battery, Ness No.1 Battery was built by the British military during World War I as part of coastal defenses. It is remembered for its role in protecting Scotland's coastline during the war.
