Castlemilk is a Glasgow district where thirty-four thousand people escaped the Gorbals slums in the 1950s to find clean air, indoor toilets and open space. The modern estate replaced Castlemilk House, a tower built in 1460 on a thirteenth-century castle site, which stood until demolition in 1972. That sudden swap of ancient stone for new concrete still echoes in the area, where community groups and cooperative housing have since rebuilt pride after population and fortunes fell.
