Overview
Castlekirk, or Hen's Castle, occupies a tiny island in Lough Corrib where a thirteenth-century keep replaced an O'Flaherty fortification. Built for Feidhlim, king of Connacht, in 1235, it later returned to O'Flaherty control and was remodelled in the sixteenth century. Its traditional connection with Gráinne O'Malley and tales of a magical hen belong to local lore, separate from the secure building history.
Who built and held it
An earlier stronghold belonging to Odo O'Flaherty stood on the island. Feidhlim Ua Conchobair, king of Connacht, built the surviving rectangular keep in 1235 after earlier conflict over control. The O'Flahertys later regained it and carried out sixteenth-century repairs, keeping the island within the struggle among Connacht's leading families.
Attack, change and use
Records place repeated transfers and destruction around the site during thirteenth-century rivalry. Later tradition links Gráinne O'Malley with its defence after the death of her husband Dónal O'Flaherty, called the Cock, and explains Hen's Castle through her. That story is important local memory, but its exact detail is not securely documented.
What survives
A two-storey rectangular keep with square angle towers stands on an island of about half an acre. The south angle tower held the entrance and a stair within the wall. Stone robbing in the nineteenth century damaged the ruin. Access requires a boat and the state monument is closed, protecting a fragile structure in an exposed setting.
Why it mattered
Castlekirk controlled a water route through north-west Lough Corrib and offered an island refuge difficult to approach without boats. Its mixed Ua Conchobair and O'Flaherty history shows that castle building was not only an English colonial practice. The later hen, witch and Gráinne stories reveal how local memory explained an isolated ruin after its written political history faded.
