Castledykes holds a chert implement and the buried heart of Dumfries Castle, where Robert the Bruce is said to have raised his standard on 10th February 1306 after seizing the place from its English garrison. The park now softens the old ditched mound, yet the river Nith still passes the site like a witness. To walk there is to touch both worlds: the small sharp tool of forgotten hands and the great banner of a kingdom learning to breathe.
