Castledykes Roman Fort

Lid (roman)

What is recorded here

No visible building remains at Castledykes Roman Fort in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, only a hidden Roman military point recorded in the national heritage register. The exact location is known to within one metre, yet the ground gives no clue that soldiers once stood there. A lid sits above ordinary soil, waiting for someone to imagine the noise, fear and routine lost beneath it.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castledykes Roman Fort as Lid (roman). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Castledykes Roman Fort was built by the Romans during the 2nd century AD, likely as part of the defensive system along the frontier of Roman Britain. It is important as evidence of Roman military presence and activity in southern Scotland.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
