Castlecraig began as a temporary Roman camp in the Scottish Borders, proving the land attracted soldiers before it attracted lords. It later became a grand estate where Carmichael, Mann and Thomson families layered their ambitions across centuries. The house now serves addiction recovery, turning its marble pillars and carved panelling into instruments of healing rather than display.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castlecraig as Temporary Camp (roman). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
