Castle Yard Riot Plaque marks the October 1865 confrontation where North Yorkshire townsfolk reclaimed a public path blocked by Dr. John Simpson of Castle Lodge. The plaque preserves the moment ordinary residents answered private ownership with collective force, turning a local dispute into a defended civic right.
On 3rd October 1865 the townsfolk forcibly asserted their longstanding public right of access over Castle Yard, which had been denied them by Dr. John Simpson of Castle Lodge.
