Castle Wood marks a post Medieval whinstone quarry in the Scottish Borders, where heavy stones may still lie buried beneath the forest floor. The exact position survives on a national record, yet the ground itself keeps its own private distance from every visitor. Men may have broken that rock for local walls or roads, carrying heavy weight through narrow valleys before the work stopped. The wood still holds the shape of that labour, waiting for someone strong enough to imagine the noise and effort lost inside its quiet darkness.
