Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Castle Tullubbayne vanished from the Loughrea landscape before human memory began. Thomas Balvburke held it in 1574, yet no stone, ditch or field marker remains for him to have defended. The castle exists only as a name in a lost list, a ghost occupying space nobody can point to. Galway swallowed it whole, keeping the barony but deleting the walls.
Nolan (1901, 112) records that the castle of 'Tullubbayne', in the barony of Loughrea, was in the possession of 'Thomas Balvburke' in 1574. Not located. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 5 December 2017

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
