Shortcastle still hides an unlocated castle, though a 1650s survey claimed one stood there under Morrish Keating of Loghlochry. The name preserves the shape of what was lost: a private stronghouse, perhaps no larger than a hall with rooms, set among fields now indistinguishable from ordinary farmland. Keating may have lived there, rented it, or merely controlled it during a time when ownership and occupation kept changing hands. The castle vanished from the landscape but never from the townland's name, where it still waits to be recognised.

According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) in 'Short Castle' there 'standeth a Castle' which in 1640 was under the proprietorship of 'Morrish Keating of Loghlochry Gent.' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 345).
