Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Castle appears on the Down Survey map of 1655-6 but resists modern location, denying even the chance to stand where it stood. It may have been a tall stone watchtower, a ruined courtyard or a malicious drawing error by a surveyor. In that gap between knowledge and imagination, the castle becomes a living creature, moving through memory and mocking the belief that every place must be known.
Unlocated castle marked on the Down Survey (1655-6) map (Loeber 1988, vol. 4, 38-9). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
