Castle

Situated in low-lying, rough pasture with very wet and boggy ground to N and W and scrub to S and E. Not depicted on the 1837 OS 6-inch map or the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map. Described as ‘Dunlis Castle (site of)’ (SMR file). Monument described in 1981 as no surface remains visible. At the location marked on the OS map there is a large mound which appears to be a natural rock outcrop. Immediately around the base of the mound there is a swampy area with reeds and rushes. There is a raised roughly rectangular-shaped platform on top of the mound which could potentially delineate the foundation of a building, although there are no standing remains of the castle. The mound has been severely pock-marked by quarrying. At the E end of the mound there is a small raised, rectangular-shaped area which appears to have been a cultivation patch with lazy beds and a drainage ditch running beside it.
