What is recorded here
Castle Listrim vanished before it could be measured, leaving only a name and a quarter of land worth sixty-six shillings. In 1587 Queen Elizabeth stripped Gerald FitzGerald of his claim and handed the place to Sir Edward Denny, yet the castle itself never showed its stones to anyone. It may still lie buried under Listrim soil, waiting for a foot to strike the first chamber.
The precise location of a castle in the townland of Listrim has not been identified. In 1587 the lands of Gerald FitzGerald which included the 'castle and town of Listroan, otherwise Lystrime, containing one quarter of land worth by the year 66s. 8d.' were granted to Sir Edward Denny (Hickson 1882, 163). Folklore collected from The Spa, Tráighlí (Tralee) recorded the following details about this castle; 'In 1587, Queen Elizabeth gave the following lands to Sir Francis Walshingham, and Edward Denny. The Castle of Listroan (Listrim), late the Erle's' (The Schools’ Collection, Volume 0438, Page 317; https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4706322/4702409/4724566?pageNum=317).
