Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Kilmallock still holds a ghost castle named for Capt. Stannard, though no exact spot remains marked. In 1653 he owned a large stone house, an old castle and a backhouse, yet even that much has slipped from the land. The absence is not empty; it is a room with the doors removed, waiting for someone to remember where the walls stood.
The precise location of Capt. Stannard Castle has not been identified. Described in the Urban Survey (Bradley et. al. 1989, 153) as following; 'Capt. Stannard Castle. Site Unknown. A large stone house and an old castle with a backhouse, owned by Capt. Stannard in 1653.'. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 01 October 2019
Built by Captain Stannard, likely in the 17th or 18th century, the structure is remembered as a historic site, though its exact location remains unidentified. It is noted in local surveys as a combination of a large stone house and an old castle, indicating its former significance in the area.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
