Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Kilmallock still hides James Fox’s Castle somewhere along Blee St, denying even the memory a exact corner. It wore a castle name but kept an orchard and garden, forcing nature to do the work of walls. Fox may have lived inside that green boundary while other men built stone, trusting fruit and foliage to mark his claim. The town forgot the entrance but never the shape, carrying a vanished house in the tilt of its streets.
The precise location of James Fox’s Castle on Blee St. has not been identified. Described in the Urban Survey (Bradley et. al. 1989, 153) as following; 'James Fox’s Castle. Blee St. This had an orchard and a garden'. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 01 October 2019

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
