Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Clooncullen holds a castle only a map remembers. The Down Survey drew it in 1655, yet no field marker or broken wall has answered that line. The drawing suggests a person lived there, argued there, or watched the barony from a height now lost. The castle may still exist beneath grass, waiting for someone to stop asking permission and start digging.
A castellated building is depicted in the townland of Clooncullen on the Down Survey (1655–6) map of Abbeyshrule barony (NLI, MS 719). Its precise location has not been identified. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 3 October 2012
