Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Caherroyn Castle appeared in a 1574 Galway list as property of Tybbott beg, yet no stones or marks remain to show where it stood. The name survives only in a written claim, stripped of walls, rooms or even a exact field. Forgetting has done what siege engines could not: it erased the castle completely.
In the list of castles in Galway, compiled in 1574, is one at 'Cahernyne' in the barony of 'Kingestowne' (Athenry), then is possession of 'Tybbott beg' (Nolan 1901, 121). Though Cody (1989, 351) equates this with a castle in townland of Carnaun, 4km NNW of Athenry (see GA084-040001-), it is more likelyto have been located somewhere in townland of Caherroyn. Not located. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 1 March 2017
