Castle, unclassified in Ballynestragh Demesne: a ruined castle recorded in the Civil Survey (1654-56) inside 3820 Esmonde acres in Kilcavan parish. Its exact spot is uncertain, but Ballynestragh House may have risen where the castle fell. The house was destroyed in 1921 and replaced in 1937, leaving the older walls to disappear under later life.

According to the Civil Survey (1654-56) Ballynesraha (Ballynestragh) and its ruined castle were forfeited by Sir Thomas Esmonde, who owned 3820 acres in Kilcavan parish, including the castle and manor house of Limbericke (WX003-024----) where he held 2000 acres at Limbericke, Tineshinagh (Tinneshinnagh) and Teilnerin (Killilierin?) (Simington 1953, 15). The lands were later recovered by the Esmonde family. The location of the castle at Ballynestragh is not certain but is thought to have been where Ballynestragh House (WX007-040----) was built in the 18th century. Sir Thomas Esmonde held the castle at Ballynestragh in the mid-17th century, as recorded in the Civil Survey of 1654–56; it is remembered because Esmonde's lands, including the castle, were forfeited following the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
