Attyflin may have held no castle at all, only a shifting residence where O'Brien blood and outside owners kept collapsing into the same land. That uncertainty is not a flaw; it is the shape of the place. Rooms, borders and memories all refused to stand still, forcing every claimant to reinvent what the site meant.

Westropp (1906-7, 153) recorded the following details about a possible castle in Attyflin which he was very doubtful about; 'The residence and alleged C[astle]. of Flan O'Brien, c. 1500 (see legend, Lenihan, p. 307). 1583 Teig mac Gilladuff O'Brien held Attefloyne and Kahirduff (Des. R., 40). Brian Duff held Atiflewin or Artiflony (Fi. 4486-4615), and died 1615 (Inq. Chan., 15). 1601 Aweone O'Brien of Athiefloyn pardoned (Fi. 6487). 1638 It was held by Conor Keown and Donat or Daniel O'Brien (Inq. Chan., 94, 215). 1655 By Marg. Stephenson, alias Bryne (C.S., xxxii., p. 15 ; B.D., p. 59; D.S.B., 25). 1666 Granted to Duke of York, 1703, sold to Mountiford Westropp of Kilkerin, County Clare (Trustee Maps, 1688, No. 4a). There was then a house, but no C[astle]. (R.I.A., Sale Books). The old house lay to the west of the modern one. There was a tradition of a battle near a burial-mound (see Proc. R.I.A., xxv.
