Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Ardcanaght Castle stood at the foot of Slievelogher, guarding the best black slate in Ireland. Men climbed the mountain not for prayer but for chips, carrying heavy stones down the mountain path while the castle watched. The rock itself was the treasure, breaking under hammers to make roofs and hearths across the country.
This record refers to an unlocated castle in Trughanacmy Barony. Sir Richard Cox's Description of Kerry in 1687 recorded that 'in this barony at the foot of Slievelogher stands the Castle of Arnagragh [Ardcanaght?] near which is to be found the best blackslatt in Ireland' (de Brún 1972).
