East Lodge and Gates stand before Castle Semple in Renfrewshire, Scotland. The lodge and gates are the surviving entrance markers of a much larger estate. They show that the castle did not appear suddenly in the landscape but arrived behind a formal threshold. A visitor would have passed through those gates before seeing the main building at all.
