Castle Rough is a medieval moated manor in Swale, Kent, where a six-to-eight-metre waterlogged ditch still encloses a forty-five-metre square island. Built between 1250 and 1350, the site displayed the wealth of its lord while deterring raiders and wild animals. Local legend claims a Danish origin in 893, but excavation supports the later medieval date. A rare D-shaped gatehouse survives on the south-west side, and the continued wetness may still hide wooden tools, seeds, or cloth beneath the mud.
