Castle Rock in Powys, Wales carries a row of sockets cut into its rock face during the Post Medieval period. The holes pierce the stone like forgotten nail marks, waiting for timber, rope or a ladder that has long since rotted away. They suggest a hand reached into the rock and shaped it for a purpose now lost. The mountain keeps that purpose hidden, offering only empty holes and the memory of a missing structure.
