Why this matters

Built by Roger Bigod, 1st Earl of Norfolk, in the early 12th century, Castle Rising is important as a well-preserved example of a Norman motte-and-bailey castle and later stone keep, reflecting the military and administrative strategies of the Anglo-Norman elite.
