New Castle Plantation emerged in East Florida in 1769, not Scotland, when David Courvoisie secured two large tracts for London investors. Francis Phillip Fatio took charge in 1771 after his wine-laden ship struck a sand bar, then hosted surveyors and governors with burgundy and confident talk of indigo profits. William Bartram visited in 1774 and praised Fatio’s neat garden, filled with European grapes, olives, figs and lemons. The venture belonged to a busy river of young plantations, where foreign ambition, local soil and London patience kept colliding.
