What is recorded here
Castle of Waterton stands in Aberdeenshire as the broken remains of a tower house built before 1630 for the Forbes family. The surviving chamber is small, with thick walls, barrel vaulting and a coat of arms still visible inside. It may have been called Abbotshall later, and it remained a Forbes seat until around 1700, when the estates passed to the Earl of Aberdeen. What is left is not grand, but it is direct: a room large enough to hold several people, tall enough to feel like a building, and old enough to have outlived the name that first owned it.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castle of Waterton as Tower House (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
The Castle of Waterton is a medieval tower house located in Scotland, built during the late medieval period, likely by a local landholding family for defensive and residential purposes. It is remembered as an example of the type of fortified structure that was common in the Scottish Borders and rural areas during a time of frequent conflict and territorial disputes.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
