Castle of Rattray is buried under Buchan sand after a 1720 storm, leaving only a grassy mound where William Comyn, jure uxoris Earl of Buchan, kept his timber seat before the 1308 Harrying of Buchan. The lost castle guarded Starny Keppie Harbour and faced Lonmay Castle across a closed estuary. People may have watched ships enter that sheltered inlet, while the Comyn family treated the mound as the heart of their northern power.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castle of Rattray as Castle (medieval), Motte and Bailey (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
The Castle of Rattray was built by the Rattray family in the 13th century and is remembered as a significant medieval stronghold in the region. Its remains are an important archaeological site reflecting early Scottish feudal architecture.
