Old Wick is an abandoned medieval castle in Caithness that watched the harbour and resisted every king who tried to take it. Its walls still stand beside the road, not hidden behind glass or locked behind a museum gate. The castle refused to disappear, which is why it is still famous.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castle of Old Wick as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
The Castle of Old Wick was built in the late 13th or early 14th century, likely by the de Moravia family, who were prominent in the region during the medieval period. It is remembered as a strategic stronghold in northern Scotland and as an example of early medieval coastal defense architecture.
