What is recorded here
Castle of Lesmoir stands in Aberdeenshire as a broken earthen bank and scattered stones, having worn through from a tall tower and walled courtyard into a farmyard dump. It may have been pulled apart after 1759, though older claims point to 1647, and that contradiction is part of its shape: a place remembered through competing wounds. The moat has vanished or become a burn, the courtyard wall survives only in a southeast corner, and a sword lies somewhere near the truth but not pinned to it. What remains is not grandeur but pressure, the kind of place that enters a person sideways and waits to be answered.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castle of Lesmoir as Castle (medieval), Moated Site (medieval)(possible), Ring (gold)(period Unassigned), Sword (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
The Castle of Lesmoir was likely built in the medieval period, though specific builders or dates are not recorded. It is remembered for its archaeological significance, including finds such as a gold ring and a sword, indicating possible high-status occupation or ritual use.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
