Castle rises in Tanderagee as a steep-sided mound twenty-three metres across, split unevenly by a modern field boundary but still guarded by a deep, waterlogged fosse. Its summit holds large depressions rather than a flat courtyard, suggesting a building or dug feature now lost beneath grass and time. The shape remains clear enough to imagine people climbing the damp slope, watching the valley, and living under a roof that no longer stands.
A substantial motte enclosed by a wide, deep, partly waterlogged fosse. Motte comprises a roughly circular, high and steep-sided mound (diam. at base c. 23m) divided into two unequal portions by a field boundary running NNW-SSE. The roughly circular summit (diam c. 10m N-S) is uneven, containing a number of large depressions.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

Built by Anglo-Norman settlers in the late 12th or early 13th century, the motte in Tanderagee is important as a surviving example of early medieval military architecture in Ulster. Its strategic location reflects the expansion of Norman influence into the region during the medieval period.
