Castle Knowe rises beside the Kilruskin Toll Road as a battered medieval mound, perhaps a motte and bailey or perhaps an older tumulus, watching the long trade route toward Fairlie and Largs. Men stripped its stone rampart in the 1890s and carried the material elsewhere, while ploughs and a culverted burn swallowed the ditch that once ringed it. An oak still stands at its east edge, fitting the old idea of a justice hill where neighbours argued under its shade. The mound has lost much of its shape, yet it remains prominent enough to mark the place and provoke arguments about what it was.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castle Knowe as Farmstead (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
