What is recorded here
Carrigatogher is a ruined circular tower house in County Tipperary, Ireland, where half a metre of wall still marks the foot of a chamber once wide enough for five people to stand across. A projecting bawn wall and a possible stone house extended the site northward, suggesting a working residence rather than a lonely fortress. The flat pasture around it opens to distant views, inviting imagination about who watched those horizons, kept firelight inside the vaulted room, or lived beside the castle when it was mortgaged and occupied. What remains is small, but the shape is clear: a round tower, a bawn, and a house built to be seen from the open land.
Situated on a low rise in flat pasture with extensive views. Only the semi-circular wall-footings of a small tower (H 0.5m) survive with the wall-footings of a possible bawn (TN020-057002-) wall (T 1m) projecting from the N face of the possible tower. It may be the remains of a circular flanking tower with a projecting bawn wall. According to the OS Letters the circular tower measured internally 5.7m approx. with a possible vault over the first floor (O' Flanagan 1930, vol. 3, 114). Low wall-footings of a possible building (TN020-057003-) to the N of the bawn may be remains of a stone house mentioned in the Civil Survey in 1654-6 (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 147). Described in the Civil Survey as: 'castle stands mortgadged unot Richard Lennard of the Citty of Lymicke sheoo Maker. Upon these 3 plds. stands a castle and a stone house' (ibid.).
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
