Castle Huntly is Scotland's only open prison, occupying a rocky outcrop above the Carse of Gowrie where Lord Gray of Fowlis built a fortress around 1452. The building has worn many names, including Castle Lyon after the Earl of Strathmore acquired it in 1614, before returning to Huntly when George Paterson bought it in the 1770s. Two women painters worked there in the late 17th century, and low-risk men still walk its chambers, turning a defensive rock into a place of gradual return.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castle Huntly as Arrowhead (flint)(period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
