Castle Hillock in Angus is a medieval motte and bailey where the Stirlings or Strivelyns of Glenesk may have lived until the Crawford Lindsays took the estate in 1358. Its steep mound, faded ditch and lost vaulted chambers suggest a place where people were kept, drowned or forgotten before Edzell Castle replaced it. What remains is a wet hillside marked by absence, yet the shape of that absence still points to the hands which made it.
