Castle Hillock is a medieval motte and bailey castle in Aberdeenshire, occupied until the sixteenth century, when Edzell Castle replaced it. Its steep mound, vanished ditches and lost vaulted chambers suggest a working fortress rather than a decorative hill. The pit beside it may have drowned offenders when drowning was the order of the day, giving the place a cruel clarity that still fits its wet, hidden shape.
