Castle Hill in Newton-Le-Willows is a Norman motte and bailey castle built after the 1066 invasion, though excavations hint it may have begun as a Bronze Age barrow mound. The bailey vanished when engineers cut the land for the M6 motorway, leaving only the overgrown hill behind. A thousand years of human ambition compressed into one earthwork, half stolen by road-building, half hidden beneath grass and forgetting.
