Castle Hill in Rochdale once held a small motte and triangular bailey above the River Roch valley, but the castle fell out of use by the early twelfth century. People may have watched weather roll across the water from that height before forgetting the stones altogether. Housing on Castle Hill Crescent now covers the levelled earthworks, turning a vanished fortress into ordinary ground beneath feet.
