Castle Hill motte, Dolphinholme

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Dolphinholme’s castle hill remains a scheduled monument in Lancaster, though the mound itself may have lost more shape than marble. It is the kind of place where a child can climb to the top and imagine a guard, a mother, or a wolf watching the valley below. The hill does not need a date to feel alive, because it still holds the shape of a decision made long before writing.
The National Heritage List for England records Castle Hill motte, Dolphinholme as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Built in the late 11th or early 12th century, Castle Hill motte at Dolphinholme was likely constructed by a Norman lord to establish control over the surrounding area following the Norman Conquest. It is remembered as an important regional defensive site and a symbol of feudal authority in the north of England.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
