Castle Hill motte and bailey and bowl barrow

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Castle Hill in St Helens, England, is a scheduled monument because a motte and bailey and a bowl barrow still stand together on the same hill. The list protects the stones and soil, but it does not promise entry, so the hill keeps its own boundary. A person may have climbed the mound, watched the valley, or buried someone beneath the barrow before written records arrived. The hill still holds that much, even when it refuses to show itself.
The National Heritage List for England records Castle Hill motte and bailey and bowl barrow as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Built during the 11th or 12th century, Castle Hill motte and bailey was likely constructed by a Norman lord following the conquest of 1066. It is remembered as an example of early medieval military architecture and as part of the landscape history of its region.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
